Principal's Desk

Dear John Street Families,

We hope this letter finds you in the midst of creating life-long memories of summer vacation with family and friends and are ready to send your children back to us for another exciting school year!

Our main goals for this year are to continue building upon our strong home/school connections, providing students with enriched learning experiences that challenge them to the next level, assisting your child with fostering new friendships, and supporting their academic growth for success as they “Reach for the stars”As the first day of school approaches, please have your child create a writer's journal or picture diary of all the exciting summer activities they've been participating in these past months.  Incorporating meaningful writing experiences will provide excellent springboards for class discussions and future writing ideas.  This year's character virtues of focus will be "helpfulness", "respect" and "impulse control".

In the area of curriculum, students in Grades K-2 will have more access to iPad stations within the classroom to further develop their technological skills and strengthen individualized instruction for differentiation in reading and math.  Our 1:1 iPad initiative for students in Grades 3-6 will continue to engage students with data driven apps to support and enrich their ELA and math skills development, as well as in the creation of various project designs.  In Grades 4–6, students will continue to expand the utilization of our zSpace 3-D technology in the STEM Discovery Lab.  These virtual reality lessons provide students with advanced equipment that supports their young, investigative minds.  In order to facilitate a middle school model experience in preparation for transitioning to H. Frank Carey, we will continue following a departmentalized program schedule for our 6th graders during the 2019/20 school year.

Our custodial staff has been extremely busy beautifying and preparing the building for opening day.  Some updates include the painting of a few classrooms, the 1st/2nd Grade staircases and hallway, the installation of new tables and benches in our Cafeteria and the addition of a magnificent mural, courtesy of “”, with our mascot, Johnnie the Cougar, welcoming all to our newly decorated "Cougar Cafe"…where character counts!  In addition to having our School Resource Officer, Mr. Manny Pyros, stationed at the Main Entrance, we’ve added more security enhancements and cameras to both the interior and exterior of our school building.

We will continue utilizing the “School Messenger” system for school-wide or special event reminders.  Please note that the 2019/20 supply lists for each grade level have been uploaded to John Street School’s homepage for your convenience at:  Parents will also be able to access the "Parent Portal" to see class placements and their child’s on-line report card.

Enjoy these remaining few weeks with your family and get ready for another fantastic school year!
